Could Squirrel Girl Become the Next Deadpool?

Squirrel Girl, the bushy tailed, rodent-befriending, college-aged superhero has seen a big spike in popularity recently. Ever since writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson launched The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl last year, a comedic all ages take on the title, she has emerged as one of Marvel’s most reliably bankable heroes. Could this mean she’ll soon be making her way to the big screen to take her place in the MCU? Maybe, if Anna Kendrick, has anything to say about it. In a recent interview with Net A Porter, when asked if she could ever see herself playing a superhero, Kendrick replied that she has considered slipping on the furry, brown spandex of the one and only Squirrel Girl. “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should,” Kendrick said in the interview, “I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half-squirrel, but I could be half-squirrel!”

Maybe Anna doesn’t poses a Marvel-Wiki’s worth of knowledge about Doreen Green, AKA Squirrel Girl, but that didn’t stop the internet from declaring the potential casting Pitch Perfect. Within hours of the interview dropping there were swarms of supportive tweets, Facebook posts and fan art. And while we here at Nerdist are 100% on the Anna for Squirrel Girl bandwagon, we can’t help but feel that this is all somehow familiar. A quippy, quirky hero from the outer fringes of Marvel slowly gaining popularity in the comics while, simultaneously, an A-list star expresses interest in the film version? Could we potentially be seeing a return of the Deadpool effect?

Sure, there are some big differences between the Merc with the Mouth and the Girl with the Squirrels. For one thing, one of them is slightly more prone to violence than the other. But at their hearts they’re both sardonic, meta-jokers with a penchant for poking fun at their own adventures. If Anna stays as vocal about her interest in the role as Ryan Reynolds did in Deadpool then perhaps we’ll eventually see a Squirrel Girl movie, even if it’s not till deep into the 2020s.

But what do you guys think? Is Anna Kendrick squirrel enough to play Squirrel Girl? Could we be witnessing the emergence of another Deadpool? And what other insane superheroes would you like to see get their own movie? Let’s discuss!
