GOTHAM Recap: It’s Gordon vs. Nygma in ‘Into the Woods’

“The people of Gotham can eat my socks.”

Harvey Bullock, you took the words right out of my mouth. How the people in the city turned on Jim Gordon so fast is really heartbreaking. He was the city’s golden boy, but with one false accusation of murder, he’s suddenly become enemy number one. Now he’s in hiding out with Bullock, holed up to try and prove his innocence. When tonight’s all-new episode, “Into the Woods,” began, the two BFFs were hard at work trying crack the case of who set Gordon up. Bullock, being the loyal BFF he is, took one for the team and seduced an Internal Affairs officer so Gordon could snatch her keys and search for evidence that would expose whoever set him up.

But when Gordon couldn’t help himself and played the hero to a woman who was getting mugged on the street (because of course he couldn’t just stand by and let her get robbed), he got spotted by a GCPD cop. Forced to assault him to get away, Gordon only dug himself into a deeper hole. He did recover a tape with the guilty person’s (a.k.a. Edward Nygma) voice recorded on it, but it had been distorted. So he went to the one person he thought he could trust to help clean up the recording: Edward Nygma himself. Ha!

The relief on Nygma’s face when Gordon explained why he was in his apartment was hilarious. The one break Gordon had in proving that someone set him up, he took right to the person who did it! That gave Nygma the chance to antagonize Gordon without seeming like he was guilty by pointing out that Gordon is just like the men he hunts because he killed Galavan in cold blood. But when Gordon realized that it was Nygma’s voice on the recording, it was too late: Nygma electrocuted him.

Nygma tried to take Gordon out to the woods to bury him alongside Kristen Kringle’s body, but he woke up and got free, leading to a chase where Nygma got a shot off and hit Gordon. Wounded, he escaped, and made his way to Selina’s where he promptly passed out. Bruce called Alfred for help, and together they brought Gordon back to Wayne Manor. They all came up with a plan: get Selina to “turn in” Gordon for the reward and freak out Nygma, thinking Gordon would go to Penguin for information on where Nygma buried Kristen’s body. So when Nygma went to dig her up and move her, Gordon followed. Nygma thought he had Gordon at gunpoint, so he confessed to all his murders, bragging that he bested Gordon, but what he didn’t know is that Bullock and Barnes were just out of sight, listening to everything. It wasn’t long until a SWAT team descended to arrest Nygma, and he was immediately carted off to Arkham.

Back at the GCPD, Barnes apologized for not believing Gordon, and gave him Lee’s number at her new job down south to make up for it. But Gordon said he needed to solve Bruce Wayne’s parents’ murder case first, and then he’ll be free to get Lee back. But not before. I’m thinking it’s going to be a while until Gordon finally calls Lee…

Meanwhile, Oswald attended his father Elijah’s funeral, and his grieving turned to shock when Grace told him he couldn’t return to their house afterwards. She tried to kick him out, but his pleas that he’d “do anything” to stay with them gave her an idea. Why pay for help around the house when Oswald will do it for free? And then after a “suitable amount of time, overcome with grief, Oswald will take his own life.” She’s already planning his murder? Yikes, this woman is evil!

The Van Dahls then began to act cruel towards their new “servant,” and Oswald accidentally discovered the poisoned drink in the kitchen that killed Elijah. He fed it to the dog to test it, and when the dog died immediately in the same way Elijah did, a flip was switched in Oswald’s brain—awaking the Penguin once again. And oh man, did he get his revenge. He killed Sasha and Charles, cooked them up like a roast, and fed them to Grace who had no idea she was eating her own children. Holy crap—talk about twisted! Penguin gleefully revealed what he had done, and then he killed Grace right at the dinner table. Goodbye mild-mannered Oswald, and hello again, Penguin!

Back in Arkham, Barbara officially woke up and seemed to be back to normal. In group therapy, she told everyone she regretted all her evil actions, like slitting her parents’ throats. But Professor Strange, unsure if she’s acting or if she’s genuine, was intrigued enough to send her out into the real world—declaring her sane again—all in the name of observing her behavior. He called her “a beautiful experiment.” He really needs to stop sending crazy criminals out into the world. This won’t end well …especially since she showed up right at Gordon’s doorstep.

And while Bruce has really taken to life in the streets, Alfred revealed to him that Lucious Fox fixed his father’s computer. But if he wanted to continue his father’s work, he had to choose between that or life with Selina on the street, because Alfred didn’t want Bruce endangering Selina’s life as well after all she had done to keep him safe. And so, much to Selina’s disappointment, Bruce decided to stay home while she went back to the city. It was fun while it lasted!
