Warning: Spoilers for Wonder Woman within!

You might not think that a major superhero movie catering to tremendous expectation and an intense filming schedule would leave much room for actor improvisation. Turns out that’s not so much the case for Wonder Woman, whose director Patty Jenkins was more than happy to let her two biggest stars play around with their imaginations. As it turns out, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine’s efforts in ad-libbing led to one of the funniest scenes in the entire film, hands down.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month, Gadot and Pine discussed the filming process of the “boat scene”–a sequence that involves Diana and Steve Trevor alone on a boat at night, sailing from Themyscira to London, making occasionally awkward smalltalk. When Diana decides to turn in for the evening and get some rest, Steve balks at her perfectly innocent invitation for him to sleep beside her.

The conversation that ensues is a hilarious exchange of double entendres, a primer on Diana’s origin story (as far as she knows it), and the impromptu education of Steve Trevor on how sex works on an island without men. At one point, Diana casually admits that the conclusion the Amazons came to (and wrote down for future generations) is that men are essential for reproduction, but not pleasure.

Surprisingly, and delightfully, Jenkins allowed Gadot and Pine to improvise the entire scene. Pine himself admitted to EW that he enjoyed the opportunity getting to play Steve as a comical foil to Gadot’s “straight woman,” which allowed for the scene to play out naturally… although he added that Gadot had the harder job of setting him up to react to those jokes.

“She’s delivering lines like, ‘My father is Zeus’,” he tells EW. “That is just so ridiculous. And she has to say it with a straight face, with a certain amount of innocence and earnestness. I get to react like any human being would to hearing something as ridiculous as that. So I had it easy.'”

It’s a great piece of behind-the-scenes knowledge, not only for the fact that it shows off both actors’ comedic chops but because the moment itself serves as a funny interlude for the audience to catch their breaths after Diana’s emotional farewell to her mother, and before the next stage of her adventure. We’ll never look at the boat scene the same way again.
