8 Surprising But True GODZILLA Facts

Since emerging from the briny depths of the Pacific Ocean in 1954, Godzilla has laid waste to Tokyo, battled countless kaiju, spawned a truly baffling Puff Daddy music video, saved humanity from greater terrors, served as a mouthpiece for postwar nuclear fears, introduced us to his garbage fire of a cousin Godzooky, and so much more. Now, the King of the Monsters is back in a brand new Japanese-language film from series originators Toho Pictures: Shin Godzilla.

In Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, the colossal kaiju is back to wreak havoc on Japan in all of his greenish scaly glory. So in honor of everyone’s favorite atomically powered creature stomping back into theaters, I dug deep into Godzilla’s history to unearth 8 surprising but true facts about the most famous movie monster of all time. From never-produced Godzilla films to discomfiting truths about life inside the Godzilla suit, today’s episode of The Dan Cave has a little bit of everything, especially if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool Godzilla fan.

Shin Godzilla is in select theaters October 11-18.
