In a move very closely akin to that episode of South Park explaining the tenets of Scientology, the Honest Trailers team from Screen Junkies breaks down and skewers Andy and Lana Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending. I actually didn’t hate the movie, but everything about the Honest Trailer critique is, well, honest.
I am a little surprised they didn’t make a point to highlight just how convenient it was for Caine Wise (Channing Tatum) to have spent so much of the second act of the movie shirtless. It’s one long topless montage for Channing’s half-wolf character as he reconnects with an old buddy at that buddy’s safe house where he begins his shirtlessness, then shirtlessly fights through the ensuing battle that happens at said safe house, followed by him somehow stealthily hitching a ride on a bounty hunter’s ship delivering Jupiter (Mila Kunis) to a different planet, and then–of course, shirtlessly–hunting Jupiter down in this new locale. This isn’t a complaint, mind you. It’s just another convenient absurdity to add to the already long list of absurdities in this movie.
Special mention in the video was given to Eddie Redmayne’s over-the-top performance as Balem Abrasax, but so much more time could be dedicated to that whole mess. Eddie is amazing in just about everything he does, but the role of Balem Abrasax isn’t going to win him a second Oscar. The forceful quiver in his “whisper voice” combined with the unexpected enraged outbursts is really something, shall we say, special.
What say you fine folks? What moments from the movie do you wish they’d included in the Honest Trailer? Which blisteringly truthful reviewed bits were your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!
