Sean Bean Talks JUPITER ASCENDING & His On-Screen Death Statistics

Sean Bean always dies. That seems to be the prevailing wisdom in pop culture nowadays. He broke our hearts in Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings to the point where we’re sitting on the edge of our seats every scene because we’re unsure whether or not he’ll make it out alive. Now, Bean stars as Stinger Apini in The Wachowskis’ sprawling sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending alongside Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, which opens this Friday. I’ve seen the film in all of its lushly designed glory, and I won’t tell you what happens to Bean, but I did have the chance to speak with the English actor about working with the Wachowskis, his role in Jupiter Ascending, and most importantly, the statistical truth behind the “Sean Bean always dies” theorem.

That’s right — our science editor Kyle Hill ran the numbers and put the Bean theory to the test. So, naturally, when I had the opportunity to speak with Bean, I confronted him with some cold, hard math.

Jupiter Ascending is in theaters this Friday.
