Netflix has actually created a Netflix & Chill button. It’s been a week or so since the grown-up section of the internet was clued in to the real meaning of “Netflix and chill” as the kids on the hot social networks are using it these days. I’m assuming you’re familiar with it at this point. (If you’re not, it’s what the cool kids say to mean ‘come watch Netflix and then we’ll hook up.’) The internet of course latched onto this revelation with the fervor of a cat who has just discovered a balloon.
But the new button is pretty awesome and straightforward if you’re into connected households. According to the write up on the product in Engadget, the prototype was built at the World Maker Faire 2015 and is called The Switch. It does everything in its power to get you ready for a night of romance…with your Netflix set-up. You can lower the lights, put your phone on Do Not Disturb, and prep your Netflix for streaming all at the touch of the single button.
Netflix told interested parties at the faire that The Switch is for makers and anyone interested in a little electrical engineering. All you need is an Arduino-compatible development kit that features on-board WiFi, LEDs and an infrared transmitter like you’ll find in Netflix-compatible TVs. By the way, it’s not newbie friendly. You’ll also need a specially connected lighting system and the know-how to navigate web servers and APIs before you can really conquer The Switch.
Netflix & Chill hit peak meme, and at some point over the weekend the internet decided it was done. With this new innovation straight from the source, I think it’s safe to say that this meme has gone to that big meme plot in the sky. At least the button should help you “chill.”
