Build Your Own Mesmerizing Kinetic Hummingbird

The medium in which an artist chooses to work can be varied – some prefer to work with oil paints on canvas, some with clay, some even find objects and make masterpieces out of what most would consider trash. An underlying thought that most artists will admit is that the materials – whatever they may be – somehow “spoke” to them and the art eventually revealed itself through that individual. Knowing that, we’d really like to know what super advanced and mind-bending force is speaking through artist Derek Hugger that caused him to create this beautiful sculpture called Colibri.HummingBirdSculptureGif

Seemingly reverse-engineering something as beautiful and intricate as a hummingbird’s flight is a very nearly impossible task, and yet Hugger has done just that. The mostly wooden sculpture mimics nature in an eerily accurate way. Notice the recreation of twist in the wings as they flap which is part of the reason hummingbirds are such precise flyers.

The most beautiful part of this sculpture is that the artist not only builds them but also sells the plans so you yourself can build one. For $99 you can purchase instructions and blueprints to cut and assemble all the parts needed to have your own mechanical hummingbird. If a sculpture of a bird isn’t your thing, then you’re still in luck because Hugger sells plans for the other kinetic sculptures he’s made which are equally mind-blowing.

Check out more pictures in the gallery below and also the other kinetic wooden sculptures that Trilby Beresford talked about back in September.

What are your thoughts on the kinetic hummingbird? Is it a coincidence that some of the gears essential to its movement are shaped like flowers? Let us know in the comments below!
