Nick Jr.’s Face Auditions For A David Mamet Play

Beloved children’s entertainer plus inappropriate situation and dialogue always equals comedy:

The amusement factor here depends in part on how old you are and how familiar you are with Mr. Face, a/k/a simply Face, who graced the Nick Jr. programming on U.S. children’s cable network Nickelodeon (and some of its international variants) for several years (1994-2004, to be precise), but even if you didn’t grow up with the preternaturally cheery animated smiley face, you’ll get the idea. A happy smiling (but down-on-his-luck) animated face reads for a role as a rapist in a David Mamet play. That’s all you need to know.

Face isn’t completely Non-Person-ized at Nick Jr.; You can play “The Alphabet With Face” on the network website. And you can always revisit the magic here:

I am ashamed of how thoroughly amused I am by this. *hangs head*

  2. Sayla says:

This just hit my nostalgia bone and I was put in a giggle-fit. Oh Face, I took you for granted when I was a kid.
Sierra, I actually said, “bow ties are cool” when nobody in the video did. My OCD was all “IT MUST BE SAID.”

  3. Lucy says:

This is without a doubt the last thing I expected to see today. And yet it is a brilliant idea for a mash up. I now know why I endured all those damn bumpers as a kid. Well done, Internet geniuses!

  4. Sierra Houk says:

“Do you like my bow tie?”
    “Yes, I do.”
This is where I expected either of them to say, “I like bow ties, bow ties are cool!”

  5. Nathaniel H. says:

Wow! That was really funny! It was weird seeing Face animated so well, but the whole exchange was hilarious!

  6. Tom Roberts says:

Wow, I didn’t realize he had so much range. Or that he got his B.A. at Carnegie Melon.

  7. Matthew Burnside says:

What a great idea! I love it!

  8. Daviticus says:

Technically, he was reading for the role of an ACCUSED rapist. Otherwise, awesome! 🙂

  9. Erin says:

    That was hi-larious!

  10. Patti says:

Haha, I enjoyed seeing Face reading for a Mamet play more than the actual clips of Face from Nick Jr. I barely made it through a minute before I had to stop watching the Nick Jr. clip. I do remember Face. He was annoying. Hearing him swear and seeing him angry was much more tolerable, and funnier.

  11. Taylor H says:

Hilarious! I still remember Face’s favorite sandwich is a peanut butter and banana by the way, memory well used.

  12. Ben says:

Reminds me of a Second City sketch that had The Glass Menagerie as rewritten by Mamet. Except that made me laugh.

  13. Eliseo says:

LMAO! Hilarious! Up until now I’ve had a slight distaste for Face.

  14. Melissa says:

    Love!
