Movie Morsels: KINGSMAN 2 Gets a Release Date

Thursday is upon us, and it’s time for another installment of Movie Morsels! Now that the Star Wars: The Force Awakens news has once again slowed down to a crawl, some of Hollywood’s other movies are coming up for air. On today’s Movie Morsels, Kingsman 2 gets a release date, David Goyer updates the Sandman movie, Bruce Willis offers his thoughts on Die Hard 6, and we’ve got the trailers for Natalie Portman’s Jane Got a Gun, and Jennifer Lawrence’s Joy! After all of that, we’ll take a look at AFI Fest’s 2015 slate.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE 2

Kingsman

Kingsman 2 already scored a decisive victory when it forced Robin Hood: Origins to push back its start date so that leading man Taron Egerton can reprise his role as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin from the first Kingsman. Yesterday, 20th Century Fox announced a release date for Kingsman 2: June 16, 2017. Keep in mind, director Matthew Vaughn hasn’t committed to returning for the sequel, so there isn’t a director attached yet, or even a finished script. It’s also unclear which characters will come back from the first movie other than Eggsy.

Now…if only there was a recent episode of Nerdist News in which Kingsman co-creator Mark Millar talked about the potential for one of first film’s stars to reprise his role. Oh wait, there is!

SANDMAN

Sandman

Fans of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman have had to wait decades to see the classic comic book series brought to life…and it dodged a few bullets in development hell that would have taken it far from the source material. But now it looks like Morpheus, the God of Dreams and his family, the Endless, may finally make it to the big screen.

While speaking with Collider, Sandman executive producer David Goyer revealed that “we’re just about to do a new [Sandman] draft…So we’re just starting a re-write with a really fantastic writer that fans of your site will enjoy that’s coming aboard, but I can’t quite announce it yet.” He added that “I feel confident that film will go into production hopefully next year.”

Last summer, Sandman and all of the other Vertigo comics were sent from Warner Bros. to their sibling studio, New Line Cinema. And as noted by Goyer, that should allow the Vertigo projects to get more attention from the studio.

DIE HARD 6

“Yippee ki-yay, motherf***er!” There’s gonna be sixth Die Hard movie whether anyone wants it or not. Die Hard 6 is reportedly a prequel to the very first Die Hard film, which would mean that a younger actor would have to portray Bruce Willis’ John McClane. Does Joseph Gordon-Levitt still have his Bruce Willis facial prosthetics from Looper?! However, there will be a role for Willis in Die Hard 6, as confirmed by the man himself.

“It’s a very good idea, a really tricky idea, and I’m very happy about it,” said Willis while speaking with Entertainment Tonight. “It’s a really cool idea, because it’s the origin story. It’s gonna happen at the beginning of this. We’re going to bounce back and forth.” He added “we’re not there yet,” regarding the casting of a younger John McClaine. “Hopefully he’s got a hard head.”

JANE GOT A GUN

Jane Got a Gun

Do you want to see Natalie Portman as a kick-ass gunslinging cowgirl? Of course you do! Who wouldn’t want that?

In Jane Got a Gun, Portman portrays the title character, Jane Hammond, a young wife whose family is targeted by the vicious outlaw gang known as the Bishop Boys. Jane turns to her former lover, Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) for help. But if anyone is going to save Jane’s family, it’s gonna be her! The first international trailer for Jane Got a Gun is out, and it looks like a lot of fun.

JOY

Joy

Jennifer Lawrence has had a lot of success from her collaborations with director David O. Russell, and actor Bradley Cooper. Later this year, they will reteam with Robert De Niro in Joy, a biopic about Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop and her rise to the top of a business empire. Lawrence is playing the title character, and it seems likely she will get another Oscar nomination for her role in this picture. Russell has also surrounded Lawrence with another impressive supporting cast that includes Edgar Ramirez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini, and Elisabeth Röhm.

Joy doesn’t arrive in theaters until Christmas Day, but the new trailer has arrived.

AFI FEST 2015

Next month, AFI Fest 2015 hits Los Angeles with a wide selection of films in five categories: World Cinema, Breakthrough, Midnight, Shorts and Cinema’s Legacy. The Shorts category is particularly prestigious because the selected film will be qualified to compete for the Academy Award for Best Short Film.

Free tickets will be available starting this Monday, October 26 at AFI.com, and the event will take place from November 5 to November 12. The full lineup for AFI Fest 2015 has been announced, and it can be found at this link.
