Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day Titles Offer CIVIL WAR II, ‘DEAD NO MORE’ Hints

For this year’s Free Comic Book Day, Marvel is releasing two issues dedicated to four upcoming events. Civil War II is headlining the issue that will also introduce readers to the ‘All-New Wasp,’ while Captain America will be the lead in the issue that teases “Dead No More.” Today, Marvel unveiled the covers for both issues, with tantalizing hints about its new storylines.

The cover for FCBD Civil War II #1 depicts Captain Marvel and War Machine going up against Thanos, whose presence in the story hadn’t even been hinted at before this image. Whether Thanos has a large role remains to be seen, but considering that the original Civil War focused on the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America’s factions, Thanos may just be on the periphery of the battle. Civil War II writer Brian Michael Bendis will be joined by artist Jim Cheung for this issue.

Free Comic Book Day Civil War II

All-New, All-Different Avengers writer Mark Waid and artist Alan Davis are collaborating on the All-New Wasp’s intro story, which suggests that she’s going to appear in Waid’s Avengers title. But who is she? Well, Marvel does love to change its comic book universe to better match the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, this could be the introduction of Hope Van Dyne, who previously only existed in an alternate future.

However, the Wasp (Janet Van Dyne) already has a daughter with her former teammate, Havok (Alex Summers). During Rick Remender’s Uncanny Avengers run, Katie Summers was kidnapped by the time-traveling conqueror known as Kang to hold as leverage over her parents; and she may still exist even after her timeline was erased. Marvel’s solicit copy suggests that the All-New Wasp may not be a heroine. If she was raised by Kang, that would account for Katie’s heel turn.

Marvel Free Comic Book Day Captain America

Writer Nick Spencer and artist Jesus Saiz are the lead creative team of FCBD Captain America #1, as announced by Marvel last month. This is the first official adventure of Steve Rogers as Captain America after the events of Avengers: Standoff. But the more intriguing reveal here is that Dan Slott and artist Javier Garron are the creative team of the “Dead No More” backup story. A previous “Dead No More” teaser indicated that it was a Spider-Man event, and this seems to confirm it.

Within Spider-Man’s corner of the Marvel Universe, there’s really only one logical character to be “Dead No More.” And that’s Doctor Octopus, the iconic villain whose body died in Amazing Spider-Man #600, but whose mind lived on in Peter Parker’s body as the Superior Spider-Man. Doc Ock’s body went missing during the Superior Spider-Man series, and his mind was recently revealed to be inhabiting a robot created by his former girlfriend, Anna Maria Marconi. This would actually be Doc Ock’s second resurrection from the dead, if he is the centerpiece of this Spider-Man story.

Both FCBD Civil War II #1 and FCBD Captain America #1 will be released on Saturday, May 7 as part of the nationwide Free Comic Book Day.

Who do you think the All-New Wasp is? Why is Thanos in Civil War II? And who should be “Dead No More”? Share your theories in the comment section below!
