Marvel Relaunches The Royal Family With INHUMANS: PRIME Special

Hello, comics fans one and all, and welcome to your weekend edition of Comics Relief! Today we begin with Marvel’s Inhumans following in the X-Men’s footsteps for their own big ResurrXion-style relaunch. Read on for all the details!

Inhumans: Prime will relaunch Marvel’s royal family

It’s not just the X-Men that are getting the big ResurrXion relaunch in 2017 from Marvel Comics; the Inhumans series of titles are as well. Last week we told you about X-Men: Prime and how it will relaunch the mutant universe, and now Marvel has announced a one-shot entitled Inhumans: Prime, which will similarly kick off Marvel’s Inhumans relaunch.

The new one-shot is written by Al Ewing, who is also going to be writing the new Inhumans series Royals. Ryan Sook will provide interior art for Inhumans: Prime, while the issue features a cover by former Teen Titans artist JonBoy Meyers. You can see the cover image for the one-shot special from Meyers above.

According to Inhumans group editor Charles Beacham, “[Inhumans: Prime is] really what sets the landscape for the Inhumans Universe going forward. As we were putting together these books and talking to the creative teams, it was really amazing how organically these stories came together and we were able to come up with an overall mission and how these things tie together and went off on their own, into their own, to be able to explore there different corners of the Marvel Universe.”

Matt Damon film The Great Wall to get a graphic novel prequel

The upcoming Matt Damon-starring film The Great Wall is set to hit theaters in February 2017. However, before it hits, Legendary Comics is releasing a new prequel OGN. The hardcover collection will feature an all new story by writer Arvid Nelson and artist Gian Fernando, and will also feature a cover from artist Whilce Portacio.

Called The Last Survivor, the OGN is set some 60 years before the events of The Great Wall, and tells “the story of young Bao as he joins the Nameless Order and strives to protect Ancient China from ferocious monsters and cunning enemies.”

The prequel graphic novel will hit stores on January 24, 2017. You can see Whilce Portacio’s cover image above. [CBR]

Renae de Liz’s Legend of Wonder Woman won’t get a second volume

It’s been a great year for Wonder Woman, and also a tough one. She turned 75, appeared in a live-action movie for the first time, had several excellent comics created about her, and even got an honorary UN Ambassadorship. Unfortunately, last week her UN status was revoked, and now one of those excellent Wonder Woman titles won’t be getting a continuation.

The Legend of Wonder Woman by Renae de Liz was one of several new interpretations of Diana’s origin story this year, joining Grant Morrison, Jill Thompson, and Greg Rucka’s takes. Written and drawn by Renae De Liz and inked by her husband Ray Dillon, The Legend of Wonder Woman was published digitally, then collected as a nine-issue print series, then collected in a hardcover. But she has just announced via social media that DC Comics has cancelled her second volume of The Legend of Wonder Woman while she was halfway into it, stating the following on Twitter:

Hopefully, DC will reconsider releasing a second volume of this very worthy series. It would be a shame that Legend of Wonder Woman ends prematurely when it’s such an amazing version of the character. If Batman and Superman can have multiple titles at once, why not Wonder Woman? [Bleeding Cool]

Skybound announces new series Extremity

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman’s Skybound imprint has announced a new series called Extremity, coming from writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson and colorist Mike Spicer. Extremity tells the story of Thea, a woman seeking revenge for the death of her family in a world of monsters, robots, and more.

According to the official synopsis for the series, “Thea dreams, but not of a better life, but of revenge on the clan that ruined her family. With ferocious battles between man, machines, and monsters, who knows where her quest for vengeance will take her?”

The first issue is scheduled to hit shelves on March 1, 2017. You can see the first cover image above.

Southern Bastards’ Jason Latour stands behind Chelsea Cain

A few weeks back, we told you about a controversy surrounding the sexist bullying of Mockingbird writer Chelsea Cain on social media and her subsequent exit from Twitter. Since then, several comics creators got together to support Cain and take a stand against online bigotry and bullying. Several comic book artists made tribute images of Mockingbird #8‘s cover, depicting different characters in “Ask Me About My Feminist Agenda” t-shirts, similar to the one worn by Mockingbird.

Now artist Jason Latour is depicting his Southern Bastards’ character Roberta Tubb in the same t-shirt and slogan. Although this was originally posted to show solidarity with Cain, Latour and series co-creator Jason Aaron have decided to use the artwork on a special variant edition of Southern Bastards #16. Latour later explained on Tumblr that it was his desire to put the image “to better use than just a social media post,” and has said that the money raised through sales of this variant will be split between the Southern Poverty Law Center and the ACLU. Stan Lee creates new LINE Webtoon series Backchannel

He may be 93, but old age has not slowed down Stan Lee at all. The co-creator of basically everyone important over at Marvel has announced a new web comic series called Backchannel, which Lee will co-write with LINE Webtoon’s head of content Tom Akel. Andie Tong will provide art for the digital series, which is expected to launch in spring 2017. You can see key art for the series above.

According to the official description, Backchannel “centers on the relationship of high school junior Tom Tanner, a comic loving, engineering prodigy, and his father Martin, a widowed police detective. While developing a highly sophisticated AI algorithm, a power awakens within Tom that grants him the ability to mentally hack into any device. While initially using this newfound power for personal gain and petty revenge, he learns of a dark secret from his father’s past that will change him forever.” [Comic Book]
