Lucasfilm Wants Female Writers, Directors for STAR WARS

The excitement of having a new Star Wars film to look forward to every year is one of the best gifts 2015 has brought to fans of Luke and company, besides the promising new J.J. Abrams directed The Force Awakens. The new slate of films scheduled through 2019 are set to be written and directed by some of Hollywood’s best and brightest filmmakers. Only problem is, they’re all men. With the on-screen diversity of the Star Wars universe at an all time high, we’re looking forward to a boost in diverse behind-the-scenes perspectives. Indeed, it’s been reported that higher-ups at Lucasfilm will be meeting with four female directors and three female writers about the possibility of working on future films in the now-annual Star Wars movie franchise. The precise numbers are reassuring, and here’s hoping that they only get bigger in 2016 as more female filmmaker fans come out of the woodwork and throw their hats into the directorial ring.

Join Jessica Chobot as we discuss why this is such a great move, and name some female writers and directors we think would knock it out of the park in a galaxy far, far away, on today’s Nerdist News!

Thanks for watching today’s show! And speaking of Star Wars, check out the Nerdist team’s audition tapes for the role of Young Han Solo if you didn’t see them the first time. And if you’re in the mood for some good old fashioned Christmas scares, Legendary’s Krampus is now in theaters!

Let us know in the comments which of your favorite female writers and directors should tell an intergalactic tale from the Star Wars universe!
