LONDON SPY Premieres on BBC America in January

BBC America has announced their co-produced drama, London Spy, will premiere on the States-based channel in January. The spy drama initially premiered across the pond a month ago, and the acclaim for the mini-series has been staggering. It has already been praised for its snappy writing, engaging story, brilliant cast, and natural approach to homosexual relationships.

The story of the series revolves around Danny, an extroverted partier played by BAFTA-winner Ben Whishaw. After a night on the town, Danny finds himself on Lambeth Bridge contemplating if life is ever going to get easier. That is when he meets Alex, an introverted banker played by Edward Holcroft, and the two strike up a relationship. Then, after Alex is discovered dead, Danny learns that Alex was actually working as a spy for MI6, and is drawn into the dangerous world of espionage to discover the truth about his lover’s death. Whishaw and Holcroft are joined in the series by Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent as Alex’s MI6 colleague Scottie, and legendary actress Charlotte Rampling as Frances.

It will be an interesting turn to see Whishaw go from being the introverted and nerdy Q in the last two James Bond films, Skyfall and SPECTRE, to playing an active role, venturing out and attempting to unravel a mystery. Don’t expect too much in the way of James Bond style action, though, as London Spy is built to be more of a slow-burning emotional ride than a thrill-a-minute action vehicle.

The mini-series is told in five parts, and will run on BBC America at 10 p.m. EST every Thursday from January 21 to February 18. Let us know in the comments below if you plan on tuning in.
