It’s a Spoilery Smackdown in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Concept Art

Editor’s note: This post contains potential spoilers for Captain America: Civil War. If you wish to avoid them, then please leave now and Hail Hydra on the way out.

It’s no small secret that two of Marvel’s mightiest Avengers, Captain America and Iron Man, will be taking up arms against one another in Captain America: Civil War. However, many were left wondering exactly who would be fighting on Team Cap and Team Iron Man come May 6, 2016. New concept art by artists Andy Park and Ryan Meinerding sheds new light on who will be fighting who, and the heroes’ motivations in the forthcoming film.

The artwork, which debuted in Total Film magazine showcases a brutal melee between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as well as former foes like the Winter Soldier and newcomers like Black Panther. Take a peek for yourself below.

Civil-War-Concept-Art-1Here is how the teams break down, according to the artwork:

Black Widow – Team Iron Man – “She’s trying to pick up the pieces of her life,” said Scarlett Johansson.

Ant-Man – Team Captain America – “It’s been a surreal ride so far,” said Paul Rudd of joining the superhero big leagues. “It’s really only just starting…”

War Machine – Team Iron Man – For some reason, they call him “War Hammer” here; maybe that’s a weird cultural difference like how they call french fries “chips.” Anyway, considering we see him with a whole blown through his armor in the most recent trailer, I’m a little bit worried about Don Cheadle.

Black Panther – Team Iron Man – We haven’t seen Black Panther suit up yet in the MCU, which is precisely what Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige wanted. “We needed fresh eyes,” he said. “[Somebody] who wasn’t embedded with the Avengers.” After the Avengers’ incursion into South Africa and the areas surrounding Wakanda, it makes sense he would side with Tony’s pro-registration team.

The Winter Soldier – Team Captain America – After being thought dead, Cap’s childhood pal Bucky Barnes returned as a deadly assassin dubbed The Winter Soldier in the previous Captain America film. Now, though, it seems he has recovered his memories and is back on the side of the angels. “You’re always trying to guess what side he is on…because he can go both ways,” Sebastian Stan said.

This steal leaves us wondering about the exact allegiances of The Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye, but based on what we saw at D23 Expo, the first trailer, and in this concept art, we can safely assume that Vision is siding with Tony, while Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye are on Team Cap. That just leaves the burning question of what side will Spider-Man ultimately wind up on.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

“Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
