Here’s Why You Won’t See Mary Jane in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is, according to advanced word, packed with villains and new characters. But one new face you won’t see is that of the other love of Peter Parker’s life, Mary Jane Watson, even if scenes with actress Shailene Woodley as the character had already been shot.

Some possible spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 below:

Speaking with Movies.com, director Marc Webb explains that the very small moment threatened to interfere with the central relationship between Peter and Gwen: “The relationship between them [Peter and Gwen] is so sacred and so powerful, that it just didn’t feel right. And it sucks because Shailene is such a f**king great actress and so cool and magical but it was just about having this obligation to this romance that I thought was sacred. It was just one of those things.”

Webb says we might see Mary Jane in future films (Webb: “The question, of course, is can Peter ever love again?”), but don’t hold your breath for Woodley returning to the role (she’s kind of busy with Divergent).

You should read the entire interview where Webb talks about some of his regrets from the first film and how he’s used the sequel as a kind of corrective (so we’re all agreed that first costume wasn’t great).

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in theaters this week.

  1. Air says:

gwen would be alive in spiderman 4 if the spiderman 4 will be clone saga gwen will be a clone made by a profesor who love gwen alot and its jakal

  2. Ashleigh says:

Gwen is still alive because she is the black cat. She got depressed when her father died so she had experiments done on her like captin America did. In the old comics, she tells captain America what happens so she is still alive but Spider-Man will NOT find out unless she make a whole nother movie on herself. So there you have it.

  3. David hurtado says:

Gwen is still alive! There making something up gwen is alive

  4. jjdixm says:

    Great film

  5. anoyying pers says:

Please make emma stone as MJ .. just by colour her hair . ngehee

  6. No MJ in the third movie plz. Tyia.

  7. samar says:

gwen dies and its fucking depressing.

  8. The person above me clearly knows a bad comic book movie when he sees one.

  9. ChuckRice says:

The person above me clearly didn’t see the Green Lantern movie!

  10. Steven says:

I for one liked the costume from the first film, however I hated ASM2! WORST comic movie I’ve EVER seen! As bad as Dolph Lundgren Punisher.

  11. Jason says:

Okay… after just seeing the movie here’s your spoiler. SHE DIES! Duh… like we didn’t all knew it was coming from the moment we found out she was going to be his love interest in the first movie… Thing is… if we can actually get back to the topic that was being discussed… I don’t think they need to bring MJ in on the next film either… if your going to do it… do it in the 4th movie… maybe casually introduce her character in this movie but spiderman 2 pretty much paved the way to lead right into the sinister six which I think is going to be more than enough of a plotline in itself… you don’t need a “love interest” in the next one… maybe have him haunted by Gwen’s ghost a bit in the next one as he was her father’s in this one and in turn show him really processing his grief and letting go of her and having it be okay to do so… just let spidey fly solo for this next one I say… maybe have some sexual tension between him and Felecia (Black Cat) since they just had to sorta kinda introduce her in this movie as well. Give Spidey a movie to grieve and move on instead of just bringen MJ immediately right in… to do so I think would only mock what he was supposed to have had with Gwen anyway. I don’t know… maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic… what do you guys think… I know if I had a love like Gwyn (or Emma Stone… I love my wife but I would so totally run away with that girl if she ever came knocken) it would take me more than 5 months to get over her.

  12. Lawduck398 says:

Jm5150, you are the worst kind of “no spoilers” troll. There was a spoiler warning. No one made you read the article and now you’re all butthurt because you chose to read it anyway. Get over yourself.

  13. Emlyn says:

Even if you aren’t aware of Gwen dying in the comics, the film telegraphs it within the first 10 minutes.

  14. Kamile Eaine says:

soooo what will happen to Emma and Andrew?
Tsk,, reason why I watched this movie in the first place is because of Emma Stone

  15. James mcGill says:

For those who say knowing Gwen stacy Dies in the Comic means that saying she dies in the Movie is not a spoiler…I say you are wrong. Please remember, there is the Ultimate spider man comic where Gwen Stacy is Alive and Well. I was looking forward to seeing which path they were going to take and everyone has ruined it. Thank you for ruining the suspense. I appreciate it. 🙂

  16. Frank says:

That’s kool. Not to troll, but Garfield sux ballz. Just make up your own diluted storyline at this point. Way too many characters stuffed into #2. Splooge.

  17. PiertoOccult says:

What are you talking about? Aeris didn’t die, she turned into a swan, everybody knows that. #Duh

  18. Anthony says:

Gwen Stacey exists for one reason, and one reason only. And that’s to die.

  19. Shamalamadingdong says:

Soylent green is actually a peanut butter based compound. You buy it thinking it’s people, but it turns out feeding your customers to your customers is an unsound business strategy.

  20. Zelim says:

It’s kind of ridiculous to assume that anyone who watches the movie is “in the know” on the comic book canon. This plot point is nowhere near the same level of cultural touch point as the Vader or Soylent green reveals. Those have cultural relevance. Gwen Stacey dying is known only to Spiderman comic book fans, and does constitute a spoiler for probably 90% of the audience of the movie.

  21. Squirrel says:

wait wait wait…. Soylent Green is WHAT?!?!?!?

  22. Eren says:

Of course she didn’t die in the first one, Gwen isn’t Uncle
Ben, they don’t just introduce her and kill her off right away. If you somehow didn’t know, sucks to be you but the movies are based in a comic book series and said movies storyline is based on events nearly 50 years old at this point. It’s on the same level as Darth Vader is Luke’s father, Aeris dies, Soylent Green is people etc

  23. Urkel says:

People saying “Gwen dying isn’t a spoiler” are being ridiculous. Sure, most people know she died in the comics but she didn’t die in the first film so there’s no guarantee that she’s die in this one (Well, now there is. )

  24. Brian says:

Here’s what the producers of Spider-man 2 and any comic book movie won’t be seeing: my ass in their theater seat.

  25. Mike says:

I agree. I think throwing MJ into the mix would take away from the amazing olive story involving peter and gwen. Also thats not a spoiler, read issue #121.

  26. Jonida says:

I don’t even read the comics and I knew Gwen was going to die. I mean, how can you be a Spiderman fan and not know. After all Peter marries Mary Jane, at least in the previous Spiderman movies.
I became a fan of Spiderman from the cartoon show. I used to be such a big fan. There were no comics in my town when I was growing up so I was never attached to the comics, even though I’m thinking about reading them, if they’re as funny as the movies or cartoon, but still as a fan, I know most of the major plotlines. Sorry Gwen, you have to go.

  27. coreycharisma says:

Gwen dying isn’t a spoiler at all, it’s common knowledge that she’s going to die at some point. Anyone who has any knowledge of the comics knows that and also knows how she dies 🙂

  28. thatbillguy says:

Yes. She is a method actress. She is actually going to die in this picture.

  29. jennifer says:

So I guess Emma Stone dies? If he can ever love again.

  30. JW says:

I’ve always hated that Gwen dies. She was way better for Peter in every way. Mary-Jane is an unintelligent, annoying, whining, bitchy, typical neurotic wanna-be type. Ugh…why can;t they change it? The comic world often rewrites and changes history?

  31. Shawna says:

I don’t watch Spider-man I never have, except for really older ones.

  32. Red Zaku says:

You are about 45 years too late to be claiming ‘major spoilers’ far as that’s concerned.

  33. Michelle says:

If you didn’t know Gwen dies, then you have no knowledge of Spider-Man other than what you have seen in movies. Not a spoiler. It’s a duh.

  34. Sean says:

OK, raise your hand if you didn’t know Gwen was going to die? Anyone? Didn’t think so. Gwen has to die.

  35. jm5150 says:

great… thanks for ruining the ending.. how bout next time dont say “possible spoilers”… that makes the reader READ the spoiler to see if it may “possibly” be one….. just say “MAJOR SPOILER”
