Exclusive: STAR WARS Sound Designer Ben Burtt on FRANKENSTEIN’s Force Lightning Connection

After yesterday’s surprise announcement that all six Star Wars movies are being made available in digital HD this Friday as part of the Star Wars Digital Movie Collection, there has been no shortage of speculation about the abundance of bonus features. At long last, there will be a handy way to keep digital copies of our favorite space fantasy in our pocket without resorting to the dark side of the Internet. Plus, with hours of additional content, it’ll take far longer than 12 parsecs to make the Kessel Run through the collection’s bountiful bonus features.

In order to help get you excited to revisit the galaxy far, far away, we have an exclusive clip from the Return of the Jedi bonus features. This clip, featuring legendary sound designer Ben Burtt, comes from Discoveries From Inside: The Sounds of Ben Burtt, brings the viewer into Burtt’s office at Skysound where he crafts the iconic sounds of the Star Wars universe. In creating the aural world of Star Wars, Burtt drew inspiration from a wide variety of sources, from wildlife to World War II-era aircraft to classic films and beyond. In this new clip, Burtt reveals how in order to find the perfect sound effect for things like Emperor Palpatine’s Force lightning, he sought out legendary special effects designer Ken Strickfaden, who created movie magic for classic films like 1931’s Frankenstein.

The Star Wars Digital Movie Collection is available on April 10 from iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, and a variety of other online retailers.
