David Tennant Joins Voice Cast for Animated Film Based on Image Comics’ CHEW

The animated adaptation of Image Comics’ series Chew is moving forward at a quick pace, and the producers have just hired David Tennant of Doctor Who fame to voice the lead character. Tennant is replacing the late Robin Williams, who was originally attached to the role.

He’s also being joined by a group of voice actors from a variety of beloved geek properties, like The Walking Dead‘s Glen, actor Steven Yeun, as well as Geek & Sundry’s Felicia Day, who of course is also the creator of web series The Guild. Jeff Krelitz, who was behind the animated Torchwood: Web of Lies, is directing. The new animated film has a script by Chew co-creator John Layman, so fans of the original comic series can rest easy, as the project couldn’t be in better hands.

For those of you unfamiliar with the original comic by John Layman and Rob Guillory, the premise of the series centers on an F.D.A. agent named Tony Chu, who has a talent for solving crimes by getting psychic flashes from the things he eats…even if the things he eats happen to have been people at one point. It’s set in a world where chicken and all bird meats are illegal, after a catastrophic outbreak of bird flu killed millions of people. So now the big black market trade is less heroin, more spicy chicken nuggets. The world of Chew is also filled with characters that get different other abilities based around what kinds of food they eat. This is one of the nuttier and more imaginative premises in comics, and animation seems the best place for it to come to life.
