At Long Last, the Marine From DOOM Gets a Toy

He’s been a hero for most of your adult life, yet he’s never had a name. He’s appeared in the bottom corner of your monitor, battered, bruised, and angry, and he’s even kinda-sorta been played by Karl Urban in a major motion picture. He’s been from Mars to Hell and back, and now he’s finally coming home in the form of a 1/6 scale articulated figure. He is the Doom Marine, also known as Doomguy and the Doom Slayer.

Armed with a plasma rifle, a shotgun, and a super shotgun (plus the chainsaw if you order from the Bethesda store), the Doom Marine comes clad in the Praetor suit from the new game, covered head-to-toe in a manner that allows anyone to identify with…him? I mean, there’s nothing that definitively insists this must be a “him.”Remember how surprised people were about Samus back in the day. ThreeA Toys‘ Ashley Wood pointedly avoids the pronoun game when describing the figure, saying only “Originally we had planned to make the helmet removable, but it just wasn’t working. You kinda realize that by revealing the face of the Marine it takes away the magic.” Not sure what his possible excuse could be for not including the signature BFG weapon…unless that’s being saved for a future figure or expansion pack. (Or kept off the market until people no longer associate the term with a kid-friendly Steven Spielberg movie?)

Though the seams of the costume are well-concealed, the Marine includes 27 points of articulation and three sets of alternate hands. Preorders run through Sept. 29th, so armor up your bank account if you’re ready to grab this bad boy for your personal dungeon. It’d be great to see more Doom after this–successors like Duke Nukem and Quake got whole arrays of articulated creatures made, but it’s time the classic saw some plastic love.
