A Closer Look at the Terrifying New Japanese Godzilla

This July, Godzilla will be making a triumphant return to the big screen in the form of Toho Studios‘ Godzilla Resurgence. If the trailer is any indication, it’ll be a return to the Godzilla films of old where he served as the primary antagonist for the Japanese people whilst frolicking through their city streets. Kotaku recently reported, via Japanese site Famitsu, that the fans in attendance of the Nico Nico Chokaigi convention in Chiba, Japan (outside Tokyo) got the chance to see the king of all kaiju up close and personal.

This production maquette is absolutely terrifying, and makes us think that Godzilla Resurgence will surely be a return to an actual monster movie, with the king of the kaiju massively more menacing than his other incarnations. Take note of the wiry and asymmetrical musculature along with the mutated bumps and scarring you’d expect from a real-life irradiated beast. I can’t look away from this version of Godzilla and it’s still damn hard to look at, a combination that’s everything a scary monster should be.

What some might notice is his elongated tail that seems, more than ever, to be his primary mode of destruction. The trailer hints at this with some wild and almost mind-of-its-own movement that steals your attention, whipping to and fro behind Godzilla as if it were his hot-headed lackey just dying to get in a fight.

If you’re so inclined, take a deep dive into the Godzilla Resurgence hashtag (#シンゴジラ or #ShinGojira) for other pictures from the convention.

What are your thoughts on this version of Godzilla? Which version was your all-time favorite? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
