ZOMBIU Reborn as ZOMBI For PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Three years ago, Ubisoft released an undead-infested first person shooter by the name of ZombiU exclusively on the Wii U. The title took full advantage of the Wii U’s gamepad, and shook up the way we viewed the zombie genre. While it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it was pretty well-received critically, and left tons of people craving a version of the game on other platforms. If you were one of those people, it’s time to grab your best weapon and gear up, because the developer announced today that an updated version of the game–which is now simply called Zombi–will be releasing for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on August 18th.

Alongside the official drop of the “U” from the title, the game, has been optimized for our favorite next-gen consoles, and transformed from its original form. While several of the changes come as a result of the loss of the second screen–which is unique to the Wii U–there are others, like the inclusion of additional melee weapons, that will hopefully make it feel like a different experience.

On moving from the Wii U to other consoles, Zombi’s producer Hélène Henry revealed, “We knew from the beginning that maintaining the tension and feel of the original was one of the main challenges, as the way ZombiU was presented on Wii U cannot be reproduced.”

He continued, “We maintain a minimal HUD as much as possible,” Henry says. “It disappears when not required, giving the game a very lonely feeling. If you have surround sound, the awesome sound mix from the original still stands and greatly helps immersion. As much as possible, we’ve tried to keep those key elements.”

Unfortunately, with the loss of the extra screen, that means the single-system multiplayer mode in which one player is able to use the gamepad to place hoards of the walking dead in the path of competitors is gone as well. Additionally, the tension-filled peek into your inventory on the second screen has been done away with. In its place, Henry revealed that Zombi will instead opt for a dedicated inventory button that will bring up your pack and obstruct your vision of most of the screen. That means that you won’t be able to see oncoming zombies unless they’re coming from the sides of the screen.

It will be interesting to see how well the game translates to the other consoles, especially since the original came out a whopping three years ago. Will people still care? Who knows.
