X-MEN: NEW MUTANTS Director Drops Hints About the Film’s Lineup

Back in March, a few rumor circulated involving 20th Century Fox’s New Mutants movie. First, it would keep the ‘80s setting from X-Men: Apocalypse. Also, it’d bring in Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane/Rahne Sinclair and The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik/Illya Rasputin. While Fox shot that rumor down almost immediately, there may have been some truth to it. After all, New Mutants director Josh Boone posted a few images from the New Mutants comic on his Instagram account that appeared to tease the film’s lineup of characters, and both Wolfsbane and Magik were among them!

In Marvel’s comic book universe, Wolfsbane was a young Scottish girl who could transform into a wolf, while Magik was the sister of Colossus and a mutant teleporter who was turned into a demon sorceress after she spent years trapped in Limbo.

The other characters that Boone put the spotlight on were Cannonball/Sam Guthrie, a young man who can turn himself into a nearly invulnerable human rocket; Sunspot/Roberto da Costa, a mutant who gains his super-strength from solar power; Mirage/Danielle Moonstar, the team’s leader who can create illusions with her mind, and Warlock, the cybernetic alien refugee from a race known as the Technarchy.

That’s most of the team’s initial members from the New Mutants comics, minus Karma, Cypher and Magma. The inclusion of Warlock is somewhat surprising, since Fox has stayed away from introducing any alien races in its X-Men movies. But if Warlock is in the movie, don’t be too shocked if Cypher/Doug Ramsey shows up as well, since they were inseparable friends in the comic’s early years.

Fox hasn’t set a release date yet for New Mutants, but it seems likely to be one of the next round of X-Men related films to hit theaters in the next few years.
