Not So Fast — Fox Shoots Down NEW MUTANTS Casting Rumor

Earlier this week, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg had some very encouraging things to say about the upcoming New Mutants movie. On Thursday, a rumor broke that two of the primary roles in New Mutants have already been cast. The problem is that 20th Century Fox has already denied that the rumors are true.

The report, which originated at HitFix, contended that Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams had signed on as Scottish werewolf Wolfsbane/Rahne Sinclair, while The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy would play Magik/Illya Rasputin, the demonic sorceress who just happens to be the younger sister of Colossus. The report also stated that Cannonball, Sunspot, and Mirage will also be in the New Mutants film alongside James McAvoy’s Professor Xavier and Alexandra Shipp’s Storm. Nerdist reached out to Fox directly for a comment on the rumor and we were told that it was “not true.”

Honestly, we really wish this rumor was true, because that’s great casting! Williams and Taylor-Joy are absolutely perfect for Wolfsbane and Magik, respectively. And if McAvoy and Shipp were sticking around after X-Men: Apocalypse, it would mean that this movie would take place in the ’80s just like the original New Mutants comic book series by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod.

The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone and Knate Gwaltney are co-writing the script for New Mutants, with Boone slated to direct the film as well. New Mutants doesn’t currently have an announced release date, but it’s highly possible that it will get a spot on Fox’s calendar in the near future.

What do you think comic book fans? Should Fox consider Williams and Taylor-Joy for the New Mutants film? Do you want to see the original New Mutants team in an ’80s-era movie? Let your thoughts be heard in the comment section below!
