I recently got to see Spider-Man: Homecoming, and I really liked it. A lot (my review). It just proved that, rights be damned, two studios could work together to make a great movie. But damn, I gotta respect the mettle of 20th Century Fox for not only continuing their “We are totally separate from Marvel Studios” train with varied television projects and hard-edged, R-rated films, but also for doubling down on them. On Friday, the studio announced release dates for six more unnamed movies in their ever-growing X-Men universe, all between 2019 and 2021.

I should be more accurate here; these are release dates for their Marvel movies; nowhere did it say specifically they’re all X-Men movies. It’s possible that one of these is another attempt at a Fantastic Four movie, but come on, you guys. Don’t pretend like anybody cares about them. What, is Fox gonna make Fant5stic?

2018 is going to see the highest number of X titles yet, with The New Mutants on April 13, Deadpool 2 on June 1, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix on November 2. But there’ll be no laurel-resting for Fox heading in to their third decade producing these movies. The new release dates are: June 7 and November 22, 2019; March 13, June 26, and October 2, 2020; and March 5, 2021.

Now, movies we can already assume are in the works are X-Force, perhaps a sequel to New Mutants, and likely Deadpool 3. But there’s no way we’re just going to get straight-up sequels to the three movies coming out in 2018 and nothing else. Fox has an entire cadre of X-universe characters it’s never fully explored, and since Deadpool and Logan have done so well, and that Simon Kinberg’s Dark Phoenix will include the continuity’s more cosmic side with the Shi’ar Empire, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility we get movies featuring the Mojoverse, or Alpha Flight, or even finally that long-awaited Gambit movie.

I think only now are Fox realizing they don’t simply have to rely on the core X family for movies, and if they want to keep up with the MCU, which they clearly do, they’re gonna give their properties a good once-over. Because, as I’ve said for years, the X-Men universe is varied and rich enough not to need the proper MCU characters.
