WONDER WOMAN: When Would A Sequel Take Place?

The first ever big screen adventure for Wonder Woman finally hit theaters, and yes, it is every bit as good as you’ve heard. (Here’s our review of it!) With the movie now a certified hit, the question inevitably turns to the potential sequel. If Batman and Superman can have sequels that go on and on, then surely Diana Prince deserves the same thing, right? I’m all for Gal Gadot showing up as Wonder Woman as many times as Hugh Jackman did as Wolverine.

Of course, this begs a few questions: what kind of movie will the sequel turn out to be? Will the film continue to bridge the gap between Diana’s exploits World War I and the present day, or will the film pick up in modern day, similarly to how Marvel dealt with Steve Rogers in  Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

Right now, there seems to be conflicting reports on just what form the inevitable Wonder Woman sequel will take. Director Patty Jenkins, who is planning to come back for a sequel, said that doing another period film was always the plan for a Wonder Woman 2. Speaking to Uproxx, (via io9), Jenkins said “It is for sure [set in the 100 years prior]. I’m definitely planning something more interesting using that period of time. Definitely, it’s the plan. I can’t say what it is! But it’s definitely right in the pocket of what you’re talking about.”

However, we get a contradictory statement about the sequel from The Hollywood Reporter, which in a profile on the director states “if it all goes according to plan, Jenkins is more than ready to return to the character for a contemporary-set Wonder Woman sequel (she and Gadot are contractually committed to a second film).” So just what in Hera’s name is going on?

Truth be told, there probably isn’t a solid plan just yet as to what a Wonder Woman sequel would entail. It might be contemporary and fill in the blanks of the past 100 years of Diana’s life, via flashbacks. We could see what Diana was up to during World War II, the swinging ’60s, and maybe some ’70s adventures as a nod to the classic Lynda Carter show, perhaps informing a modern day adventure. The possibilities are endless.

I for one would do a modern day Wonder Woman classic, adapt the graphic novel A League of One. The OGN by Christopher Moeller isn’t my favorite Wonder Woman story, but it is a very cinematic one. In this story, while visiting her homeland of Themyscira, Wonder Woman learns from an oracle that an ancient evil will rise up and destroy the League. Painstakingly deciding to sacrifice her own life for those of her teammates, Diana individually defeats and dispatches Batman, Superman, and the rest of the team so she so that she can fight the evil alone as a Justice League of one, sparing her fiends. Wonder Woman vs. the JLA would be an event movie in the superhero genre to be sure.
