Who runs the world? Girls. And that’s exactly why Warner Bros. and DC Comics officially announced a sequel to director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman during the DC Extended Universe sizzle reel at Warner Bros. Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con. UPDATE: On Tuesday, July 25, Warner Bros announced the release date for the Wonder Woman sequel: December 13, 2019.
The fast-tracked sequel should come as little surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the box office this summer. Not only is Wonder Woman the third-biggest Warner Bros. film of all time and the highest-grossing film by a female director, but it also became the highest-grossing film of the summer, surpassing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.
So far little is known about the Wonder Woman sequel. Recent reports from ScreenRant and TheWrap have suggested that Wonder Woman 2 will possibly be set in the 1980s, putting Diana of Themyscira in the waning days of the Cold War. The report also suggested that Chris Pine could reprise his role as Steve Trevor in the hotly anticipated sequel. While those of you who saw the first film might raise an eyebrow at this tidbit–and rightly so–you can relax because this will likely take place via flashbacks. Or maybe they’ll just inexplicably resurrect him for the sake of the undeniable chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Prine. You know — because comics.
Gal Gadot will next appear as Wonder Woman in Justice League, which received a new trailer and poster today, opening on November 17, 2017.
