Wolverine’s LOGAN Trailer Looks Unlike Any Superhero Movie We’ve Seen

By now, we’ve seen what feels like every conceivable sort of superhero movie. The grim, the witty, the surreal, the naturalistic—what with the abundance of titles that have sprung forth from the loins of Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, and 20th Century Fox since the early 2000s, we were bound to have undertaken a fairly versatile helping across the genre. Clearly, the minds behind superhero cinema are still raring to surprise us. As far as we can tell from the first trailer for Logan, the X-Men franchise’s third and presumably final standalone Wolverine movie looks distinct among its species.

In stewing solemnly in the existential demons of Hugh Jackman’s immortal beast over the high-octane action and adventure for which its kin are foremost known, Logan already feels as dissimilar from something like X-Men: Apocalypse, its most recent predecessor in the X-Men series, as anything we might imagine.

The trailer pairs Wolverine with young Laura (Sienna Novikov), a fellow ageless mutant who is in dire need of his help. Though Wolverine seems hell-bent on committing himself to personal isolation, the wisdom of his old pal Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) seem to convince him that there is still good he can do, and that nobody needs him more than young Laura… and, perhaps, vice versa.

Though we’ve seen many the introspective and emotionally wrought superhero flick before, the first trailer for Logan nevertheless feels like a beast all its own—a thick character drama that may even conjure up more tears than it does thrills. After director James Mangold’s last impressively cerebral take on Wolverine, we’re looking forward to seeing how much he does with the character this time around.

What did you think of the trailer? Let us know!

Will Logan be the most unconventional Marvel movie yet?
