How the New WOLVERINE Film Image Ties into OLD MAN LOGAN

Earlier this week, Logan director James Mangold revealed the first full image of Stephen Merchant as Caliban. Now, Mangold has unveiled the first official glimpse of Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine, and he’s going full Old Man Logan!

Mangold posted the image to his twitter account, which features Jackman’s face visibly aged and scarred via makeup, and he has a distinctly shorter hair style than we’ve previously seen from his incarnation of Wolverine.

For comparison’s sake, here’s what Wolverine looked like in the classic Old Man Logan storyline by Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven.

It looks like Jackman’s Logan is rockin’ a bit more facial hair than his comic book counterpart, but it is pretty close. Considering that Wolverine was already well over 100 years old by the time of X-Men: Days of Future Past, his aged appearance and the scars on his face suggest that he may not have the healing factor that kept him alive so long. Supposedly, Logan is only set a decade or so after Days of Future Past. In Millar and McNiven’s original story, Old Man Logan had largely renounced violence and he refused to pop his claws until he was finally provoked by the loss of someone close to him.

Because the rights to certain characters are split between Marvel and 20th Century Fox, a straight up adaptation of Old Man Logan was impossible. But there are a few themes that may carry over into the film. In the comics, Logan had a family and children of his own. One of the first images teased for this film featured Logan holding a child’s hand.

Actress Sienna Novikov is playing Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23, and she may be Logan’s surrogate child in the film. However, there is also the possibility that Laura will be his biological daughter in the movie as well. In the Marvel Universe, X-23 was cloned from Wolverine, and they eventually formed a father/daughter bond with each other. If she turns out to be his actual daughter in this movie, that could work well…if Mangold and his creative team go in that direction.

We’ll find out more when Logan claws its way into theaters on March 3, 2017.
