Anyone who has ever been to a state fair has faced the onslaught of deep fried everything. Deep fried Oreos, deep fried pickles, deep fried butter, and just when you think thereâs nothing left in the world that you haven’t already fried, now thereâs deep fried water.
Our place is not to question why… well, actually it is, so hereâs the why, Boing Boing features YouTuber Jonathan Marcus who created these crispy balls of moisture for an event in San Francisco called the Stupid Shit No One Needs and Terrible Ideas Hackathon 2.0 where people âWork diligently on projects that make no sense at all. Come make something we will all regret.â Indeed.
Just how did Marcus achieve this seemingly impossible task? He used frozen reverse spherification (calcium alginate membrane) to create a solid mass of water. This liquid orb was then breaded in flour, egg and panko crumbs and then ever so gently placed into a deep fryer.
Fried to a crisp golden brown, when cut open you guessed it, the water bursts into nothingness. Is your mind blown? Well, it could be worseâpairing water with oil is generally a big no-no, because it could go very wrong very quickly. The warning on Marcusâ video even says, âThis is potentially very dangerous. If water leaks out while the sphere is frying in hot oil, it may explode, sending scalding oil everywhere. Do not attempt without proper safety precautions. Do not consume until cooled down or you may get burned. Also they don’t taste particularly good. You have been warned.â In other words, kids, donât try this at home. Just drink water like a normal person.
Marcusâs comment upon eating/drinking the first deep fried concoction of itâs kind? âYep, thatâs water.â
