Weird Al Joined Weezer on Stage to Play Toto’s “Africa”

What started out as one determined fan’s quest to get Weezer to cover Toto’s classic song “Africa” has turned into this year’s most unlikely phenomenon. What could have been a simple novelty has officially blown up, as the song has become a staple on radio stations across the country. It has even reached number one on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs chart! In the wake of its popularity, Toto responded with its own version of Weezer’s “Hash Pipe.” But last night in Los Angeles, the surprise summer hit reached its nadir when the band blessed fans down on the floor by bringing out “Weird Al” Yankovic and his accordion to rock out with them.

Weezer, who is currently touring with The Pixies, played at The Forum in L.A., and midway through their rendition of “Africa” Weird Al came out clad in his signature Hawaiian shirt. He then proceeded to get into an accordion/guitar solo showdown with Rivers Cuomo (clad in a sleeveless Nirvana shirt, as though this entire scene didn’t already have enough flavor), before walking over to a mic to sing backup on the rest of the song.

Everything about this song has been, well, weird, but this is really the best part of this story yet, because “Weird Al joined Weezer to play a cover of Toto’s ‘Africa’ in Los. Angeles” might be the all-time greatest Mad Lib that magically came to life.

What Weezer song would you most want to hear Weird Al cover? Bless our comments section by raining down on it with your best suggestion.
