Weezer Finally Gives in to Fan’s Repeated Requests to Cover Toto’s “Africa”

Here are some good rules for using Twitter:

  1. Don’t “@” anyone
  2. Don’t pester strangers
  3. Don’t ask celebrities for anything
  4. Don’t tweet. Ever

But even the best rules are sometimes meant to be broken, especially when no one is actually being harmed and you are trying to bring the entire internet joy. Such was the case for this one dedicated fan who kept asking Weezer to cover Toto‘s beloved song “Africa,” which they finally did after months and months of requests.

The Twitter account weezerafrica has been trying since 2017 to get the band to record their own version of the classic track by politely and humorously, albeit repeatedly, pleading with/telling/cajoling Weezer to do so. And all of that hard work and commitment finally paid off when the band posted their cover online this week.

Gotta say, I might not love that weird synth section at the end, but the chorus here is pretty damn fun.

Even funnier: before Weezer shared this one track that they knew someone had been desperate for them to record, they actually posted a different Toto cover first. A week earlier, they shared their own version of the underrated hit “Rosanna,” which means for seven days this was the best joke most of us weren’t aware of.

Remember, 99.99% of the time you should just leave everyone alone on Twitter, including yourself. The only exception is when you’re trying to get a band to cover “Africa.” What’s the point of having social media if we can’t use it for that?

What other song would you love for Weezer to cover? Give us your best suggestions in the comments below.
