Watch The Muppets Perform N.W.A.’s ‘Express Yourself’

Just like how N.W.A.—the legendary hip-hop group and subject of the hottest biopic currently in the game, Straight Outta Compton—was a bold and subversive voice when they first hit the scene, so too were The Muppets. Before them, television had few, if any, shows whose cast was made primarily of felt. Both figures have also had pop culture renaissances as of late: The Muppets starts airing on September 22 on ABC, and the hype leading up to it—which includes a 10-minute first-look presentation—has been huge.

What this all means is that this mash-up featuring Kermit and company performing N.W.A.’s “Express Yourself” is both topical and highly entertaining.

YouTube user AnimalRobot used footage from the 1979 film The Muppet Movie and set it to the N.W.A. track to some effect. It’s also reassuring to have Fozzie Bear himself tell us that he doesn’t smoke weed—because that would be a terrible example for his young, impressionable fans. We’re having a hard time hearing Kermit’s banjo in the song, but beyond that, we have a winner of a web video on our hands.

With their newfound resurgence in popularity among the meme-loving, parody-making public, N.W.A. has been subject of many a mash-up as of late, so check out a few of our favorites in the gallery below, which includes nods to comic book characters, My Little Pony, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, late night TV hosts, and more. There are plenty of others out there, so flood the comments with the best ones we missed.
