Conan O’Brien Reveals N.W.A. May Not Have Been That Hardcore

Look, we’re not doubting that legendary hip-hop group N.W.A. was a bold voice for the oppressed that was prone to ruffling some feathers, especially those of the FBI, who wrote a letter to N.W.A.’s record label in response to “F–k tha Police,” and those of the police themselves, who stormed the stage at an N.W.A. concert in Detroit to stop them from performing the song.

What we are saying is that maybe Conan O’Brien had a point when he said on last night’s Conan that perhaps N.W.A. wasn’t as hardcore as the world remembers them. Conan watched the new biopic about the group, Straight Out Of Compton, and was surprised about how tame they actually were. For evidence, he shared a totally real clip from the movie that not only makes them look soft, but also portrays them as sell-outs.

In the clip, Ice Cube enters the studio with a new set of lyrics that the rest of the group is really into. Then they get on the mic and start dropping truth about Fresca, which was apparently their soda of choice. But we can’t blame them too much for their milquetoast lyrics: Fresca has zero calories, and the bubbles do tickle when you drink it.

There is something strange about the clip, though: The song is called “Fresca Time,” but we looked and looked and it seems like N.W.A. is ashamed of the song in retrospect and have scrubbed it from the Internet entirely, because this video is the only trace of the record we could find anywhere.

Regardless, Fresca is great, and all them other sodas can suck it
