Watch COOPER’S TREASURE Hunters Actually Uncover Sunken Treasure

The biggest question leading up to the premiere of Discovery’s new outer space/underwater treasure hunting docuseries  Cooper’s Treasure—aside from, you know, “WHAT?!” and “HOW?!”—was whether the treasure map drawn by astronaut Gordon Cooper during his Project Mercury mission in 1963 was legit.

But now that professional treasure hunter and close friend of Cooper’s, Darrell Miklos, has begun uncovering treasure after treasure, the question surrounding Cooper’s map has now become: “Just how legit is it?”

In this exclusive sneak peek from the series, Miklos and his team go on a dive and search through the sediment on the ocean floor. After a few minutes of examining the area, they hit the jackpot. Next comes the time to excavate the area so Miklos can search for treasure. Lo and behold, he discovers an artifact. (It’s all very slow-moving, considering it’s underwater, but incredibly exciting to watch nonetheless.)

Tuesday’s episode, airing May 2nd at 10PM, reveals a connection between the sites Cooper spotted from space (and that Miklos is now excavating) and some of Christopher Columbus’ fleet.

Miklos told Nerdist before the series’ debut, “The treasure map from space is very accurate, and right now, at this stage of the game, we’re five for five. … I can almost guarantee that unless we find a wreck that’s been picked by somebody else, every single target on that chart I believe to be a legitimate target.”

According to Ari Mark, co-founder and president of AMPLE (who made this whole thing possible) added, “The map has exceeded all of our expectations. It’s always hard to blindly believe in things, but when you have this sort of tangible proof, suddenly you realize the story is much bigger than us.”

“Even in 2017 there are new shipwreck discoveries to be made and new mysteries to be unraveled,” explained fellow co-president Phil Lott. And we are ready for more mystery—that’s for sure.

Cooper’s Treasure, which comes from AMPLE and Amblin Television, airs Tuesdays at 10 pm on Discovery.
