The long-awaited Top Gun sequel is moving forward, and one of the original cast members has been asked back. On his Facebook page, Val Kilmer has revealed that he said âyesâ to Top Gun 2 without even looking at the script.
âI just got offered âªTop Gun 2,â wrote Kilmer. âNot often you get to say âyesâ without reading the script⦠We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen Iâve ever met in the film biz, but letâs fire up some fighter jets again!!!â
The late Tony Scott directed the original Top Gun in 1986, and the film was one of Tom Cruiseâs first blockbusters as a leading man. Cruise played Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, while Kilmer portrayed Ly. Tom “Iceman” Kazanski. In the film, Maverick and Iceman were rival Navy fighter pilots who attended the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School at NAS Miramar. However, the events of the movie forced Iceman and Maverick to fly side-by-side during the climatic aerial battle.
Cruise is reportedly interested in reprising his role as Maverick, who became a Top Gun instructor at the end of the film. Scott was also said to be up for Top Gun 2 before he committed suicide in 2012.
According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Top Gun 2 will examine the idea of fighter pilots being made obsolete by military drones. Considering Maverickâs status as a veteran pilot, Top Gun 2 will probably introduce a new generation of pilots flying under Maverickâs command that will prove the value of actual pilots in warfare.
Top Gun 2 doesnât currently have a director or a release date. But, since Kilmer has received a formal offer for the sequel, the remaining details should come together quickly.
