Network president David Nevins announced the news at the Television Critics Association 2017 winter press tour, revealing that the long-in-the-works new season will debut with a two-hour premiere on Sunday, May 21 at 9 p.m. Additionally, the third and fourth episodes of the new season will be available on Showtime’s streaming and on demand platforms that same night. The 2017 season will be 18 hours in total. Now that’s some damn fine news!
We still know pretty much nothing about what the season will entail—honestly, the only thing we know for sure is that it’s a real thing—and Nevins didn’t reveal any new details other than the fact that, like the rest of us, he’s really, really excited about it.
“David Lynch is one of the great film masters of my lifetime,” he told reporters, “and I think that the version of Twin Peaks you’re going to see is the pure heroin version of David Lynch and I am very excited to be putting that out.”
We do know, however, that donuts played a role in the new episodes’ creation. In December, Showtime released a 30-second teaser that featured Lynch eating a glazed donut, and Nevins said that the director served donuts before every screening of each new Twin Peaks episode.
Nevins also had this to say about the new episodes: “It will really reward close watching and making sure you’re paying attention to close details.”
And while you can never say never in showbiz, he also confirmed that the 2017 season of Twin Peaks is not planned as a launchpad for multiple new seasons, even if it should get Walking Dead-level ratings. “It’s designed to be a closed-ended, one-time event,” Nevins confirmed.
Besides, in this new age of television, it’s harder to determine whether a project is a success or not. “I honestly have no idea what to expect in terms of ratings,” Nevins said.
Added Showtime president of programming Gary Levine, “The fact that we are presenting the return of Twin Peaks and David Lynch’s pure view of it with him having directed the entire thing, for us is already a success.”
