On May 16, we received glorious word that Trainspotting 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Danny Boyle’s 1996 dark comedy, had finally begun filming. On that same day we also got a release date (January 27, 2017 in the UK and February 3 stateside) and a first trailer. Today, as Yahoo reports, we got our second teaser.
The new Trainspotting 2 clip doesn’t offer much in terms of narrative, but it does firmly cement the train motif and brings back Trainspotting‘s unofficial theme song, Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life.” Plus we get a sneak peek at the original cast’s new look 20 years later. Sick Boy, Renton, Spud, and Begbie (Jonny Lee Miller, Ewan McGregor, Ewan Bremner, and Robert Carlyle, respectively) are simply standing beside train tracks as a train passes by, wearing those same deviant looks on their faces they had throughout the first film. From those looks, it would appear that not much has changed since that first drug-addled adventure. And indeed, when taken in conjunction with the first teaser, which sports manifold debauchery and a characteristically sarcastic discourse on life from Renton, I think it’s safe to say the drugs are still here.
Trainspotting 2—or T2: Trainspotting 2, as Sony curiously appears to be calling it, evoking James Cameron’s T2: Terminator 2 title—is based on Irving Welsh’s 2002 novel, Porno. Check out the new teaser above and the first one below. Hopefully in the coming months we get a more full-fledged trailer that shows what the gang’s been up to all these years.
