TNT Developing Sequel to Stephen King’s FIRESTARTER Because Sure?

It’s no secret that genre television is very popular right now. It seems like everywhere you look there are witches and vampires and zombies, oh my! From The Strain to Penny Dreadful, which both premiere this summer, to The Walking Dead and Hannibal, horror is everywhere on TV and it cable network TNT wants to get in on the action announcing at their Upfront presentation this year “a dynamic portfolio of thrilling genre fare.”

Assisting the dive into “trilling genre fare” on TNT is the series Breed, described as an “atmospheric, supernatural drama centers on a volatile race of creatures who are committing brutal murders in the Pacific Northwest, and the reluctant FBI investigator who pairs with a female assassin to track them,” and The Shop, a sequel to the 1980 Stephen King novel Firestarter. It should be noted that The Shop is NOT a reboot of the 2002 SyFy miniseries Firestarter: Rekindled but honestly, with all of the remakes and reboots flying around, I wouldn’t have been surprised.

TNT’s The Shop will take place 20 years after the events of Firestarter when main character Charlie (played by a young Drew Barrymore in the movie version) believes that The Shop, the agency that tried to kidnap her as a child and use her powers for evil, has been dissolved. She discovers she is wrong when Henry Talbot, a former member of The Shop, finds her and tells her that there are others like her. The official announcement from TNT elaborates on the premise saying, “It turns out The Shop is very much alive, bigger and badder than ever, and its dark experiments are unleashing terrifying new entities on the world. It’s now up to Talbot, Charlie and the rest of the team to find The Shop and destroy it for good.”

Both of these dramas sound ambitious but I’m thankful for anyone trying to get in on the genre game. How about you? Do either of these projects sound appealing to you? Do we need a Firestarter follow up all these years later? Let us know in the comments section!

  1. TJ Heesch says:

grammatically, is that headline correct? doesn’t the NERDIST have a proofreading department for these things? you know, in the likely event it makes someone look dumb?

  2. Nowadays as long as SK isn’t objecting to it I don’t complain. Dr Sleep is a sequel over 20 years removed & was still dope.
