THE WOODS Trailer Promises Something Evil on the Way

There seems to be something of a horror renaissance going on with movies that tend to be a bit more sparse, a bit more contextual, and more about setting the mood heavily before diving into the scares. The recent The Witch and last year’s It Follows are examples of this, but at the forefront of the movement is director Adam Wingard whose films with writer Simon Barrett mix scares with humor and John Carpenter-inspired music in a perfect blend for today. With the trailer for Wingard and Barrett’s new film, The Woods, it appears that it’s pure horror from start to finish.

Being afraid of things in the woods isn’t a new thing for horror movies, but that’s entirely because it plays on universal fears: the dark, the unknown, being watched, and raccoons. That last one might just be me, but the others are the stuff of any sane person’s nightmares. Wingard and Barrett have already played in well-trod realms and have always managed to turn it on its head, like the home invasion thriller in You’re Next and the Terminator-meets-Michael-Myers actioner The Guest. The trailer for The Woods promises that something evil is in the woods, and it’s not just mosquitoes and discarded camping equipment. Given what’s come before, I’m betting it’s a monster movie. A bigfoot or something.

The movie’s already got a heap of accolades from respected horror movie reviewers and with a back catalog like theirs, The Woods is in good company. One review in the trailer even calls it a “new beginning” for horror. Lots of things claim to be “game-changers” or “book-rewriters” but we’re always open to the next big thing. But, like if this movie ends up being about a killer raccoon, I’m out and will never return.
