In the comic book realm, Batman and Captain America have fought each other during various inter-company crossovers. But now it’s time for their respective partners, Nightwing and the Winter Soldier to fight in a new live-action short!
Nightwing vs. the Winter Soldier is the featured bout in the latest episode of Super Power Beat Down, a web series that has previously pit Darth Vader vs. Batman, the Joker & Harley Quinn vs. Deadpool & Domino, and Optimus Prime vs. Iron Man, among several other match-ups. Nightwing and Winter Soldier do have some similarities with each other, as both operate in the shadows of their respective mentors. Before he became Nightwing, Dick Grayson was Batman’s first Robin, and he was trained in several non-lethal forms of combat. Bucky Barnes fought in World War II alongside Captain America before he was presumed dead and turned into a Soviet assassin with a bionic arm.
In the video, hostess Marisha Ray sets up the conflict between the two former sidekicks before fans at San Diego Comic-Con weigh in on who they think would win in the potential fight. But if you want to skip straight to the battle itself, go to the 4:46 mark and note the visual callbacks to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Aaron Schoenke directed this episode and starred as Nightwing, while professional wrestler John Hennigan played the Winter Soldier. Taitana Dekhtyar makes a cameo appearance as Black Widow, while Amanda Lynne Shafer appears as Barbara Gordon/Oracle.
The short plays out in a world where the Marvel and DC heroes apparently co-exist, and it ends in a surprisingly lethal way. There’s only one hero walking away from this fight! But the winner was determined by a fan vote, and the polling has already begun for the next episode of Super Power Beat Down, which will pit Wonder Woman against Wolverine.
