Welcome back to The Pull List, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again; time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations. And for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. Speaking of arming yourself, this week we get to learn how C-3PO got his red arm! This is a moment that we will pass down to future generations, no doubt.

The biggest mystery of The Force Awakens is finally answered! Okay, maybe C-3PO’s red arm wasn’t the biggest mystery in the movie, but I have this Funko bobble head of ol’s Golden Rod and it really bugs me that I don’t know why he has a red arm. That is, I didn’t know until I read this issue. James Robinson and Tony Harris do some damn fine work in this issue and turn a somewhat simple story into a real tearjerker. Marvel’s Star Wars books range from good to great, and you can count The Phantom Limb in the great category. Funny, heartfelt, and action-packed, this comic has everything a Star Wars fan could want. Plus, Tony Harris absolutely kills it with gorgeous pages and epic layouts. This one is a must-buy, folks.

WEIRDWORLD #5

Weirdworld is perfection. Wonderfully epic, gloriously hilarious, and hauntingly beautiful, this is consistently one of the best comics on the stand. It’s like Lord of the Rings but with cars, and dogs who fly airplanes, and cat wizards, and Marvel Comics supervillains. Okay, maybe it’s nothing like Lord of the Rings, but there is something truly legendary about it. The story of Becca’s quest to escape Weirdworld has turned into a story about saving Weirdworld. There’s a war waging, and like it or not, Becca is right in the center of it. Sam Humphries is crafting the hell out of this story. and holy crap!—Mike Del Mundo is a god of comic book art. Years from now, when civilization has crumbled and we are dust and bones, futuristic explorers will find a copy of Weirdworld and will revel. “These were a truly great people,” they’ll say as they become enchanted by the art of Del Mundo. Then a giant space lizard will eat them and the war between the future explorers and the space lizards will wage for a thousand years.

MOON KNIGHT #1

Moon Knight #5 from Marvel Comics

Ever since Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey revamped and relaunched the Moon Knight series it’s been something special. Ellis and Shalvey didn’t stay long, but the look and tone they set carried through as new creators stepped into the title. Now, we have Jeff Lemire, Greg Smallwood, and Jordie Bellaire continuing the tale of the madman known as Moon Knight. I’m not sure this book needs a #1 on the cover, but it’s safe to jump in here if you want to give Moon Knight a go. What really matters is the fact that this is a damn fine comic book. Lemire, Smallwood, and Bellaire gel right from the get go and find a rhythm that you can instantly groove with. Lemire writes a good crazy dude in Moon Knight, and Smallwood and Bellaire produce some absolutely amazing pages. Seriously, this comic is a beauty. Moon Knight has had bad luck when it comes to keeping an ongoing series around, but here’s hoping this one sticks, because it’s really, really great.

DEADLY CLASS #20

Deadly Class #20 from Image Comics

This arc of Deadly Class is so brutal. Just when you think you can catch your breath, the brutality returns and heads are being cut off. Rick Remender is bleeding all over these pages, building characters that are flawed, ugly, and conflicted. Nobody is perfect, nobody is a hero, they’re all just trying to survive. And then there’s Wes Craig. When it comes to action and energy, Wes Craig is king. His pages move, flow, and burst a sense of bottled lightning. Deadly Class looks and feels like nothing else on the stands, and that’s what we love about it. From Rus Wooton’s unique lettering to Craig’s goofy flashbacks, to Jordan Boyd’s firm, solid colors, Deadly Class is top notch through and through. We continue to love this book and can’t wait to see what happens next.

THE DARK & BLOODY #3

The Dark and Bloody #3 from Image Comics

When it comes to being severely screwed up, The Dark & Bloody takes the cake. This is no simple monster tale—it’s about magic and myth, about a darkness that we can’t truly understand. Shawn Aldridge and Scott Godlewski are building a world with layers and ghosts, a place that feels dangerous to dwell. We learn a lot in this issue, we get to see how things are connected, and the answers are not pretty. There seems to be little hope for the characters in The Dark & Bloody, but like a car crash on the side of the road, we can’t help but stare. Maybe it’s the pitch perfect writing or the masterful artwork. Or maybe we’re all just sick in the head? Hell, maybe it’s a little bit of all those things. Either way, we are sticking with this series until the very end, which we are starting to sense is going to be very dark. And bloody.
