THE POWERPUFF GIRLS Return to Townsville in 2016

Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles are back, as the Powerpuff Girls are set to debut an all-new series next year on Cartoon Network.  The show about a trio of superkids created by “Chemical X” who fight crime and “save the world before bedtime” was created by Craig McCracken and ran for 78 episodes from 1998-2005, helping to transform Cartoon Network from the home of Flintstones and Scooby-Doo re-runs to the cool original programming hub that transcends demographics. One could even say that Cartoon Network is the house that Chemical X built.

Now after being away for ten, long years, the daughters of Professor Utonium will be back saving Townsville, USA in an all-new reboot series set to debut in 2016. Luckily, they’re not being rebooted too hard—judging from the promo images released. The girls still look like they always did, which is a good thing: I don’t think anyone wants a darker, grittier, Powerpuff Girls reboot, although you know someone in a board meeting probably suggested it.

Creator Craig McCracken won’t be a part of this new version of the show, but he has given it his blessing…except for one major thing: the original voices of the girls, Tara Strong, E.G. Daily, and Cathy Cavadini were not asked to come back, and found out about being replaced via social media. Tara Strong called it “a stab in the heart” and posted this image which kind of says it all:

The other two original actresses tweeted similar comments and creator Craig McCracken later tweeted a photo of the original three in the recording studio, quoting the opening of the original cartoon, saying “these were the ingredients chosen.” Interestingly, Tom Kenny — who voiced the narrator and the Mayor — was asked to come back.

Cartoon Network declined to comment but did release a promo image —as well as three Vine videos — of the three new actresses who will be voicing the girls: Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li, and Natalie Palamides. Regardless of your thoughts on the new voice cast, you can now see the new promo image of the three new actresses below, along with their respective character:
