The O.C. Makes its Triumphant Return in a Musical

On August 30 in Los Angeles, The O.C., the “Teen Drama’s Teen Drama” of the mid 2000s, will be getting the MUSICAL treatment in a one-night only event.

Based on the Fox TV that ran from 2003-2007, The O.C. tells the story of Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie of Gotham), a troubled teen who is taken in by the wealthy Cohen Family. He then forms a brotherly bond with their son Seth (Adam Brody), and strikes up what will become an ill-fated romance with the beautiful Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton). It’s been 8 years. You had PLENTY of time to get caught up.

The production comes from the same company that gave us Cruel Intentions: The Musical. Currently, only the roles of Kirsten Cohen, the family matriarch, Marissa’s original boyfriend Luke Ward, and show creator Josh Schwartz have been cast. That’s right, the show’s creator has been cast. No news as to who is playing Phantom Planet, who sang the theme song.

I watched every episode of this show while it aired. Not because teenage relationships spoke to me as a person, but because during that time, it was the only show that would make amazing comic book references (at the time) on a regular basis. I specifically remember freaking out when Seth taught his girlfriend Summer (Rachel Bilson) all about Watchmen, and bringing up Brian Michael Bendis in causal conversation. Here’s hoping there is a song dedicated to Comic Book Club.

So what do you think? Are you excited for the musical version of The O.C.? Or are you holding off for the Smallville musical with the Act I performance of the hit song “No Tights, No Flights”? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments below.
