THE MATRIX and THE FLY May Get Reboots, and More Movie News

It’s a Jake Gyllenhaal special in today’s Movie Morsels. Not only have we got the new red band trailer for the actor’s new sci-fi thriller Life, we’ve also got word on Donnie Darko‘s return to movie theaters! In non-Gyllenhaal news, we have the latest trailer for Despicable Me 3, along with some pretty divisive new remake possibilities…

The Fly

The Fly

There’s no doubt that David Cronenberg’s The Fly is a science-fiction horror film classic par excellence. But since Cronenberg’s movie is a remake of the original 1950s version The Fly, it is after all fair game to be remade itself. (According to the remake rule book.) Let’s therefore not get too bent out of shape that Sleight director J.D. Dillard is in talks to co-write and helm a new version for 20th Century Fox.

Life

“What have we done?” While the question is asked perhaps one too many times in the new red band trailer for Life, the trailer itself has me more stoked than ever for the new original sci-fi. The big question is whether or not this chiller will satisfy our Alien fix (it is clearly inspired by Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece) better than Scott’s own return to the universe, Alien: Covenant, which comes out later this year?

Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko

As mentioned, the original cult favorite Donnie Darko is heading back to movie theaters nationwide, newly restored in 4K resolution for its 15th anniversary by Arrow Films. You can find out if Richard Kelly’s dark headscratcher is playing near you by going to the Cartilage Films website.

Voice from the Stone

Speaking of horror, Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke is featured in the eerie new trailer for the gothic potboiler Voice from the Stone, which looks to be cut from the same cloth as The Innocents and The Others. Has the Queen of Dragons met her match in her new position as a British governess who runs afoul of a horrible family secret?

Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me 2 may have been a better film had Al Pacino not quit his role as the film’s principal antagonist El Macho. Fortunately, Despicable Me 3 is unlikely to run into the same problem, since its biggest cast addition is Gru’s long-lost twin brother Dru, who is voiced, like Gru, by Steve Carell! Will Dru tempt Gru to return to his supervillain ways? Here’s the film’s latest trailer…

Blade Runner 2049

It turns out that Harrison Ford ain’t the only Blade Runner veteran back for the sequel. Edward James Olmos will also return for Blade Runner 2049. Get the full scoop here.

Godzilla

Godzilla Anime 2

Smile, giant monster fans! The much-talked-about Godzilla anime film from Toho is heading to Netflix later this year. So you won’t have to wait for 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters to watch the big guy strut his stuff again.

The Matrix

Last but not least, it looks like Warner Bros. is going to reboot The Matrix. And if they don’t actually call it The Matrix Rebooted, well, someone at that studio just isn’t doing their job correctly.
