Look, a lot of actors have the thing that defines them in every movie they do. You can trust Brad Pitt will always be eating something; Tom Cruise will do his damnedest to energetically sprint toward or away from something; and Tom Hanks – for whatever weird reason – needs you to know that his bladder works in almost every movie. Look it up, we’ll wait…
We know, right!? It’s insane. It’s pretty much every movie except Toy Story but we wouldn’t put it past Pixar to have animated something.
Screen Junkies just made a great case for a new movie trope of Matt Damon always being saved from things in their latest Honest Trailer for The Martian. Through the epic tones of Jon Bailey’s voice, we realize that Damon has been rescued from a lot of things and “from space” has come up more times than seems possible.
We’ll never tire of the irreverent humor of the Screen Junkies and their Honest Trailers ability to point out repetitive plot points, grossly overused movie tropes and a more than a fair share of intelligent film critique. Their take on The Martian is especially cutting as it sheds light on flaws we often willfully ignore in sci-fi movies. Sure, an astronaut botanist is skilled in other areas but why is he SO good at everything else he attempts, and why would he know how to repair/build a spaceship and how on Earth (err.. Mars) does a habitat’s pressurized atmosphere get sealed in with some plastic wrap and duct tape?
