The JV Club #64: Christina Jasberg

Janet’s high school friend and mental health advocate Christina Jasberg travels from Tucson to rug-it-up with an intimate discussion about the roles of family history, brain chemistry, environment, hormones, and Scooby Doo in the life of a person faced with extraordinary challenges, and how our society supports — and doesn’t support — the mentally ill.

This is one of my very favorite episodes. Thank you Tina for sharing. It is always encouraging hearing other people’s journey’s and overcoming hardships. Thanks for using your story to help others.

  2. janet says:

My Dears! Thank you sooooo much for the great notes. Tina has seen them too and it’s made her feel like a hundred bucks! More, even! 🙂

  3. Shmoo says:

I posted this on the facebook wall, but deleted it once I realized it was going to show up on all of my friend’s timelines.
Janet suggested I share these on the facebook wall, so I’m going to share them here instead. This is the only episode I’ve listened to twice that wasn’t Paget because I love it so much.

Here are a couple things/people that have helped me get through life.

1- Andrea Gibson and her poem The Madness Vase/The Nutritionist – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddGEWzUZIlU&feature=youtu.be

a few lines if you need some convincing to hit play: “I have been told sometimes the most healing thing we can do is remind ourselves over and over and over other people feel this too.”
“You are not weak just because your heart feels so heavy.”

She also just created a website based off of this poem: http://stayherewithme.com/the-madness-vasethe-nutritionist/

2- I’m 25 now, and at 15 I discovered who P!nk was. I honestly say she saved my life. Her most recent album has a song called “The Great Escape” that she wrote for her friends who were in the place where there’s just nothing that can be said to make you feel better. http://youtu.be/_Wl5-audkPY

If anyone feels like talking about the things I’ve mentioned here or how great the jv club is, send me a message on fb(Debra Shmoo) or find me on twitter/tumblr- Shmoo06. 🙂

Once again, thank you so much for this episode. <3

What a great episode, thanks (Chris)Tina. It’s always so special when people are willing to share their stories, particularly when they might not be so easy to share. Those episodes usually end up being among my favourites, ‘celebrity’ or not.

And since someone has to be the one to do this – Scrappy was Scooby’s nephew! ‘Ruh-roh’ is still something I find myself saying more than a grown person probably should.

  5. Amy says:

What a special episode with a truly beautiful person. If I say much more it will become an essay, so I’ll leave at thank you Christina for sharing your story and thank you Janet for sharing your friend with us.

  6. Paul says:

I thought this was a great episode Janet. So heart-felt.

And people throw around the word “hero” so much, but Christina fits the definition of somebody worthy of being held in high regard. To be able to have such a tough journey in life and make it to the other side with such a sunny outlook.

I watched “The Big Year” this past winter and really enjoyed it.

  7. rob S. says:

I started cutting in college. There was a TV movie about it with Sean Young. I never saw the movie just the ads. I told a housing lady about it & was “asked” to leave. Sometimes when I get frustrated I bite my fingers or rub my nose VERY hard.

  8. PJ says:

Forgot to add: Janet, please keep doing the podcast with whoever you want. This episode was very interesting, and while fans can basically only suggest celebrities (of some sort), and that’s fine, fame is not the measure of someone’s worth, and there are so many stories to share that are just as important if not more for the lack of a good, visible platform. It’s always enriching to learn about people you haven’t heard about before.

Paul Gilmartin’s podcast does such guests more often, but his podcasts can be quite a bit tougher to listen to due to their heavy nature.

  9. Toria says:

Thank you for sharing your story Christina! Janet, thanks for being great as always.

  10. PJ says:

A hummingbird’s nest in your ivy? You are so lucky Janet. Those are cute and elusive birds.

And, technically, it should be déjà déjà vu, not déjà vu vu…
