THE FLASH Explodes With Plastique Casting News

October’s most hotly anticipated superhero show, The Flash, is about to get a little more explode-y: The CW series announced today that they’d cast the role of sometimes-villain Plastique for the show’s fifth episode.

Actress Kelly Frye will be taking on the part, according to E!, which updates her origin for the DC TV universe. Here, Plastique is Iraq veteran and bomb disposal expert Bette Sans Souci, who gets a science explosion to the face courtesy of S.T.A.R. Labs. When she recovers, Bette discovers that she can load any object with explosive energy, making her a target for shadowy types in the U.S. government who’d like to use her as a living weapon. She’ll end up finding an ally in Grant Gustin’s Flash, who probably doesn’t look kindly on things like that.

The character was originally conceived by The Fury of Firestorm writer Gerry Conway and artist Pat Broderick back in 1982. There, she was (and keep the laughter to a minimum) a terrorist attempting to force the secession of Quebec from the rest of Canada through an attempted suicide bombing. If it weren’t for Firestorm being around to vaporize her bombs and clothing (!) she might have been blown to smithereens along with loads of civilians. Bette became a recurring character in the book, becoming a love interest for Captain Atom, and ultimately getting recruited onto the Suicide Squad.

Since the series has already cast its Ronnie Raymond (a/k/a/ one half of Firestorm) with actor Robbie Amell and The Atom is coming to Arrow, but there’s still no sight of Captain Atom, how likely is it that we see the same romance play out? And at this rate, how likely will it be that we’ll see some kind of Justice League (sans the Big Three) on the small screen before they make their way to the big screen?

The Flash will premiere on October 7th on the CW. Who else would you like to see make an appearance on the show?

  1. Ray says:

Forget the Atom and Firestorm make Plastic Man happen.

  2. Joe says:

Captain Atom is Nathaniel Adams, and Air Force Pilot who was disintegrated in a military experiment and was later able to reintegrate himself into a living atom bomb. Ray Palmer was a scientist who uses the power of a white dwarf star to allow himself to shrink down to incredibly small sizes. The only relation is part of their superhero name.

  3. Ariam Ferro says:

You do realize the Atom and Captain Atom are two different characters, right? That makes it hard to have “the same romance play out.”
