THE DIVISION’s Open Beta Shatters Records with 6.4 Million Players

Boy, we’ve had quite the weekend. Not only was online multiplayer available completely free of charge on the PlayStation 4 (which you normally need a PlayStation Plus subscription for), but Ubisoft Massive’s upcoming open-world, third-person shooter, The Division, was also in open beta. According to the game’s official site, over 6.4 million people played the beta across Xbox One, PS4, and PC—which makes it the “biggest ever [open beta] for a new game brand on current generation platforms.”

To put the impressive statistic in perspective, Destiny‘s open beta raked in 4.6 million players back in 2014, which was record-breaking at the time. Seeing The Division‘s beta surpass the number is good news for the title, especially with its March 8 launch right around the corner.

The developer also noted:

“On average, players spent around 5 hours as an activated sleeper agent journeying through The Division’s open world. The Dark Zone proved to be particularly popular, with players spending around 2-hours in the PVP zone, with almost 50% of agents turning Rogue in the process. Fun fact: over 63 309 800 contaminated items were successfully extracted out of the Dark Zone.”

“Thanks so much to the millions who joined The Division’s Beta and started to help take back New York City. We hope you all enjoyed playing the game as much as we have enjoyed making it. See you on March 8 in New York City, Agents!”

The open beta kicked off last Thursday, February 18 (on the Xbox One), and Friday, February 19 (on PC and PS4), and concluded last night.

Were you among the 6.4 million players? If so, what did you spend most of your time doing? Let us know in the comments below!
