The 47th Samurai: The Trailer for “47 Ronin”

Keanu Reeves in a mystical Japan, playing a half-breed who joins a band of 47 samurai out to avenge the murder of their master by a warlord? Fighting monsters and witches? Well, that’s what you’ll get around Christmas time in 47 Ronin, also starring Pacific Rim‘s Rinko Kikuchi. The movie is described thusly by Universal:

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.

Dude.

Yeah, I’m torn between making Matrix jokes and Point Break jokes and Bill and Ted jokes, so I’ll pass on all of them and just tell you to make your own, or give your impressions of the movie, in the comments below. Excited about Johnny Utah wielding a sword? And, yes, this story (a fantasy take on a true story) has been made into movies before, but never with Keanu Reeves, so we’re in uncharted territory now.

  1. RG says:

I think “mutant from 300” = an ogre of traditional Japanese myth. Same with the flame thing… yunno, qi stuff.

  2. Harry in TO says:

Seriously? Flame being stopped by a thin samurai sword? Neo is the one and only hope again? Is this a role requirement for Keanu? Throw in the mutant from 300 and a little Pirates of the Caribbean too? Hopefully it’s just the trailer that looks bad.
Acting looks good and Hiroyuki Sanada from Last Samurai is amazing!

  3. Kristen says:

Looks pretty bad ass to me.

  4. RG says:

I’m sorry guys, but this looks pretty effin’ cool.

Johnny: What do these two things even have to do with each other? I’d say the execution of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter was a failure, but that doesn’t make every semi-historical supernatural embellishment-fest a failure by association.

  5. Johnny says:

If they wanted to do a generic fantasy film set in Japan why did they have to choose an actual historical event to name it after? Did we learn nothing from Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter?
