The 16 Best Comics of 2016

The 16 Best Comics of 2016

It has been one hell of a crazy year for comic books. Marvel started the year off with the end of Secret Wars and the reshaping of the Marvel Universe as we know it, while DC blew everything up and just Rebirth-ed their entire line. Image Comics continued to pump out amazing creator-owned works and Dark Horse Comics introduced several awesome new books. So much changed in comics in 2016, and mostly for the better.

At times, it was clear there were too many awesome comic books on the stands. It’s good problem to have, sure, but for a lot of us our pull lists became unwieldy monsters that were impossible to control. We’re buried in fantastic stuff. It has been an embarrassment of riches.

From Superman to Wonder Woman and Black Widow to Black Panther, it’s a great time to be a fan of the superhero genre. In fact, 2016 has been the best year for superhero comics in quite sometime. DC’s Rebirth has rejuvenated their entire line and produced an insane amount of great comics. Marvel has continued to push their books into new and different directions resulting in some of the most unique stuff they have ever put out. Valiant Entertainment has the most cohesive and thrilling superhero universes around. Tights and fights are better than ever.

Of course, superheroes weren’t the only ones killing it this year. Science fiction continues to reign supreme, fantasy is on fire, and most crime comics are consistently awesome. We can’t stress enough, there is so much good stuff out there. Really, if we covered everything that should be on a Best Comics of 2016″ list, this article would have 78 entries on it. At least.

Obviously, we can’t do that, so we trimmed it down to 16. These are 16 of our favorites, although they clearly don’t represent every great comic that came out this year. We’d encourage you to jump into the back-issue bins and find all the awesome comics that came out in 2016. There’s a lot of them, but it’s worth you time. There’s nothing better than reading an awesome comic book. Nothing.
